Washburn Idol Series WI45WHK Electric Guitar Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The guitar is underpriced (in the market overall) for it's value (although I think an ebony fretboard would be nice). Probably underpriced because Washburn is known for acoustic guitars, but everything I read/saw on the Idol line looked good, so I took a gamble.

Very high quality construction, you get a guitar of high quality for a very reasonable cost. Has a great finish on it, the fretboard inlays are unique and very nice. Grover tuners provide very stable tuning.

The humbuckers are fairly hot (I also have a Les Paul Studio Faded, and these are fairly close to those) - very easy to drive into distortion. (I find I usually play with volume down around 3 or 4 in order to keep the sound clean.)

There were two things I didn't like:

Comes with 9's for strings - I like 10's and might even go to 11's (but have that problem with every guitar except hollow/semi-hollows).

Has plastic knobs for volume/tone - I'm switching those out with metal. Again, have that problem with most guitars as well.

The neck plays very well, and (at least mine) came well adjusted on the action. Also have a Godin Exit 22 and the playability here is very comparable. Really nice fret sizing, and easy to get around the neck. There's a lot of internet chatter about the VCC system - I don't think it makes the tone knobs useless (as some claim), but I do think it reduces their effect. Still playing with volume/tone dialing, and switching among pickups, you can get some great range of sounds out of this thing.

I'm really happy with it, it's an impressive instrument (my 5th electric) and it still provides a unique sound that I'm not getting from the other 4. I wouldn't hesitate buying another Washburn electric, they're a great bargain, great value.

Dean DC6 Guitar with Floyd Rose Locking Tremelo, Classic Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This guitar is a steal!!!I bought this guitar because of the EMGs, floyd rose, and the new SUPER thin neck designed for this guitar. Before this guitar I was in love with my Jackson DKMG, and I have a hard time going back to it now after playing this guitar. The neck is extremely thin and it allows for the EASIEST access to the higher frets. The only trouble I had was the difference in playing style. With my Jackson I played with a lot of bends and vibrato.I had trouble playing that way with this guitar, but I quickly adjusted to using the whammy instead. When buying this guitar from Amazon, it comes with the worst strings I have ever played.Don't bother using them just replace the strings and set the tuning and floyd rose how you like and have at it.

Alder Body
Dean uses an alder body for this axe.Alder is a common choice for electrics, and generally offers an even-keeled tone. In combination with the active EMG pickups, you'll get a versatile, high-output tone, suited for most any player--pedal types, metal types, or those who just want a gritty blues tone.Bolt-On Construction
The DC6F uses bolt-on construction, an affordable alternative to set-neck or thru-body designs. The advantage of this design is that if you do have any neck trouble down the line, you can easily replace it. The maple neck features an ultra-playable 24-fret ebony fingerboard, with Dean's wicked-looking "Deceiver" inlays.EMG Active Pickups
The DC6F offers serious tone with its pair of active EMG humbuckers. In the bridge position is a high-output 81. Utilizing powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils, the 81 delivers incredible amounts of high end cut and fluid sustain, so your leads can cut through the densest mix.

In the neck position the Elite features an 85-7. It's a slightly more well-rounded version of the aggressive 81. With close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85 offers plenty of versatility, with a muscular growl and smooth lead tones, perfect for the muddiest of blues to the most extreme metal. On the electronics front this axe keeps it simple, with a three-way toggle between pickups and a single volume knob. Grover Tuners
If you play guitar then you know what this means--solid, dependable tuning from the industry standard. These guitar machines are a triumph in engineering and style, with a gear ratio of 14:1, perfect gear meshing, and zero backlash and slippage. The gear box has a special lubricant for lifetime, trouble-free service.

Original Floyd Rose Tremolo System
The patented and often imitated double-locking design of the Floyd Rose Tremolo System allows you to lock your guitar in tune at the nut and at the bridge. Engineered like no other tremolo system, the Floyd's high-quality steel parts are manufactured to exacting specifications. Beat it up as much as you want--from traditional vibrato to dive bombing leads or flapping loose strings, and stay in tune while you do it.

Washburn Idol Series WI64BK Electric Guitar Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This particular higher-end permutation of the popular Idol series offers very solid features for an instrument at this price point. The Buzz Feiten tuning system--coupled with the 18:1 Grover machine heads-- virtually guarantees perfect intonation and ease of tuning, and the VCC knobs (in place of standard tone controls) has the overall effect of both a tone control and coil splitter, with the zero setting offering sparkling single-coil, Strat-like clarity with the noiselessness of a humbucker.Cranking to 10 produces high-gain, classic humbucker sounds, and experimenting with any in-between combination with either or both of the two VCC knobs can produce a decent replication of virtually any other pickup sound you'd possibly want, from P-90's to lipsticks. The neck is fast and smooth, though a bit narrow for some players.

The only glaring flaw is the lack of good finish workmanship, and trading off stellar performance for cheaper (albeit relatively unimportant) parts. The three-way pickup selector switch on my brand new (at the time)guitar broke off at the tip after about a week (easily replaced for a couple of dollars at the local Guitar Center) and the nut at the output jack worked itself almost completely off in about the same amount of time.Several screws (truss rod cover, pickup mountings and elsewhere) were similarly loose and had to be snugged down

For playability and versatility at this price, you really can't do much better. This thing was anGuitar World Editor's Choice for "Best Guitar under $1000" the year it debuted back in 2004 or 2005.If slightly higher quality hardware had been used and setup finish had been properly done, this guitar would be close to perfect.
