Many people compare them to Fender's Mexican Strats, and some even compare them to Fender's American strats. They are that good. I have yet to hear of a disappointed owner.

The Classic Vibe Stratocaster® '50s provides unmistakable '50s-era Fender® vibe and tone. The alder body has a Two-Color Sunburst, Lake Placid Blue or Olympic White finish. The vintage-tint gloss-maple neck (Two-Color Sunburst and Olympic White models only) has a maple fingerboard with 21 medium-jumbo frets and a modern 9.5" radius. That long-familiar tone comes from a custom set of alnico III single-coil pickups, clear and bright, with terrific sustain even in crunch mode. Custom staggered polepieces provide improved string-to-string balance.

In positions 2 and 4 the tone is awesome, fantastic traditional Fender vintage quack.Right out of the box, it needed nothing, not even a setup or intonation correction.In fact it was almost in tune.Tuners hold very well.Frets were dressed and action low to moderate and felt very vintage with slim fast neck.Very warm tone and suitable for Blues and Smooth Jazz. Headstock 70s larger and creates better sustain. Been playing over 40 years and was shocked at its quality, tone and playability for the small money.Definitely a keeper. Initially bought it as a gift for my nephew but wound up keeping it for myself, as it was a really terrific guitar when played in a tube amp (Fender 65 Champ).A little goldmine. It is now my main lead guitar among 5 Strats and 3 Teles. Don't know how Fender did it, but this one was so good, I bought a second one, and it too was comparable.So don't waste big money chasing guitars while this one is available.Buy it quick before everyone catches on to it.Who knows, maybe one day it will be a collector item.No risk and low investment.GO FOR IT.

(More customer reviews)Having owned them all at one time or other, in my 47 years of guitar playing, the American Stratocaster is THE best guitar on the planet for the money. It is lighter than a Gibson Les Paul which is easier on the shoulder after those long sets. It's classic design / looks are timeless. Out of the box it has it's own distinct Fender sound as well. I have an ART 2000 which I 'filter' this guitar through and my sounds are limitless. I notice that another reviewer says to 'save money and get the MIM / made in mexico.' I totally disagree. Believe me, you get what you pay for in overall quality. Buy the American made Stratocaster. I have several guitars which I use. This Strat is the most fun to play and it will make you want to play even more.

Ok, I oredered this guitar without the illusion of it being a great guitar. I've played guitar for 15 years and have fallen in love with the Billy Corgan sig. strat. So I chose the Startcaster as a spring board for modifications.

When I got into the Starcaster i quickly did an assesment:
1. the low E buzzed; if you have this problem then look straight down on top of the guitar from the top of the head stock. you will see that the low E notch has been cut deeper than the rest of the strings.

2. the tuning pegs (not the key itself) are wobbly, which lead to retunes after each chord you strum

3. the bridge isnt bolted down tight; mine was loose when i took the strings off. first i noticed the bridge "slinking" off the body when i'd do a bend.

4. the tone knobs arent aligned right with the numbers on them.

5. the fret board has an extremly weird varnish on it that cause the strings to make a scratchy sound.

6. i took the back panel off and saw that the tension springs were warped and werent putting to much resistance against the bridge.

7. under the pickguard was a sad sight: tons of saw dust and a couple extra screws that didnt have anything to do with the guitar were tossed in (two were magnetically stuck to the neck and mid pick-up. wiring looked ok, but bad soilder jobs.

here's what i did:
Machine head: i put black wilkinson E-Z lock tuners
Pick-ups: bridge- DiMarzio Chopper Mid- DiMarzio Fast Track 2 Neck- DiMarzio Pro Track
Nut: Replacded with a Graphite 1.65"
Tension Springs: DiMarzio Tremolo Bridge (guitar comes with 3; i replaced with 5)
Neck: sanded the frets and filed the fret wires; buzz is gone

I recomend strap locks!!!
oh and i didnt mention the whammy bar; it was bent in an odd direction, but i'm not Eddie Van Halen so i dont use one. 0;)

(More customer reviews)I bought this guitar as a gift for my 9 year old daughters birthday and she loves it. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and it exceeded my expectations. The "whammy bar" isn't really funtional as far as I could tell, but the guitar stays in tune for a good while and the sound is clear and strong. I've seen worse quality for more money, that's for sure. Definitely a better purchase then the Fender Squire.

(More customer reviews)After 7 months of research and saving I have finally bought a G&L Tribute S-500 (sunburst w/ Rosewood neck). Before I begin the review, let me give you some background information for you to frame my review to maximize its usefulness to you.

I have played acoustic guitar exclusively for 12 years. I have been wanting a versatile guitar to play mostly clean lead, blues, and jazz music. I had to educate myself a ton but was quite certain I needed a strat for the versatility. I had my eye on the new and highly affordable Fender American Special which can be found for $799-$999. I do not consider my self an electric guitarist, but certainly consider myself a guitarist, so keep that in mind throughout this review. I am running this guitar without pedals through my amazing Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp.

I chose the G&L over the Fender for two primary reasons. First of all, I was able to get my G&L from a dealer for under $650 out the door. That's about a 200$ difference from the entry level American Special. The second reason was the G&L is far more beautiful... its finish absolutely blows the Fender out of the water.

Though the Tribute series are assembled in Indonesia, all the parts are American made and appear to me to have a very high quality. Tough I have only had it a short time, it appears to be very well assembled. Everything is tight, it stays in tune and mine came in perfect condition as a new guitar should. There is no buzzing and the action came perfect with no setup required. I love their PBT (Passive Bass and Treble control system) which gives me far more control over my tone on the guitar. The neck feels wonderful

If I am comparing this guitar to any Fender MIM strat, as I probably should, this guitar easily earns 5/5 stars. However, I seem to be comparing it to the American Special and in that light I have to give it a 4.5/5 simply because of the comfort and class of owning an American strat. I still hope to own an American strat one day... and time will tell if I ever regret not spending that extra $200 bucks for the American but as for now, I'm quite happy!
