(More customer reviews)Picked up an ME508 at a yard sale for $[...] and have been having a blast with it. My other guitar is a Burny Rock'n Roll Model (a nice knock-off of a Gibson TV). The First Act Guitar is much less refined sounding but has a nice tone and is very playable. I have to admit, I'd looked down my nose at the First Act guitars until I saw the Westerberg model and read something where he was talking about how he ended up endorsing the brand.

Until then, I'd only seen the strat-like First Act guitars sold at Target next to the slide whistles. I just thought it was all crap. But some of the FA designs are darn inspired, like this one. Then I think about how desirable Danelectro/Silvertone guitars became for their handsome design and simplicity of construction and the First Act guitars seem like a comparable phenomenon. I wouldn't say any of this if the guitar didn't play well. If there's anything that makes me crazy, it's instruments marketed to beginners that are such junk that a virtuoso couldn't get a nice tone out them. This is not the case here. My ME 508 is a pleasure to play. I don't know what the quality control is like at First Act -- maybe I got lucky. It's lightweight and a little heavy toward the headstock and the knobs scrape the paint, but who cares. It has a decent tone, the neck and fretboard have a nice finish, the action is spot on, the frets are clean, it stays in tune, it's handsome in an unfussy way, and it was $[...]. And they're not much more than that new.

Hats off to First Act for making some distinctive looking guitars that are dirt cheap and actually play pretty well.

First Act Lola CE120 Electric Guitar - Metallic Black Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a First Act Nickelodeon Sponge Bob guitar for my grandson around Christmas time. Unable to find one anywhere I went to First Act's website. They are out of stock too! While browsing their website I looked around their guitar section just to check out their offerings. Since I own a First Act Garage Master guitar I'm familiar with the quality and sound. I had seen their Lola and Sheena custom guitars before but not the lower end model. When I saw the Lola CE120 AND the advertised price I was floored! "It can't be" I thought. They had the guitar listed, and still do; at $79.99 plus shipping. I thought it was a misprint but and all three available colors the price was the same. I read the description about the item and it's made of a basswood body with thru-the-body strings, maple neck, and rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. It has a single humbucker pickup with Alnico V magnets, and separate tone and volume chrome bubble knobs and sealed chrome tuning machine heads. All this for $79.99. I figured, "what the heck. Let's order one." Since I ordered right around Christmas time and selected normal shipping, the guitar arrived the first week of January. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this guitar. I see them listed for three to four times the price I paid and even at those prices this guitar is well worth the money. I took it out of the box and checked the tuning and I was ready to go. The factory setup was superb! The action, and intonation were right on. The sound is somewhat in between a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson LP. Funky, crunchy tones with classic rock and oldies. Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, The Beatles Day Tripper, and Wild Cherry's Play that funky music sound just like the artists intended it to sound. The LOLA is part of First Act's SFA and Limited Edition guitars. SFA stands for "Specially For Artists". The Limited Edition Lola is $1500.00 and comes with dual humbucker pickups, mahogany body, and more upscale refinements that rival the major brands. It's a shame First Act is regarded first as a toy maker and second as a guitar maker. Sure they sell lots of toys and entry level guitars at Toys "r" Us, and other department stores, but their SFA and Limited Edition guitars would look right at home next to the big names at Guitar Center or your local music store. Check them out if you're in the market for an inexpensive, well made quality intrument.

First Act Paul Westerberg Signature Guitar Review

(More customer reviews)I'll admit it: I'm a Paul Westerberg fan. No shame in that. When I decided to buy this guitar, I did it with my heart rather than my head. I figured if it sucked, I could return it. I didn't know what to expect, other than Paul picked a different FirstAct model up at a discount store and played it on tour. Now I can understand why. My other electric is a Squier Strat (Japanese!) which has the 80's metal setup -- floating tremelo, high-output humbuckers, etc.

It was nice to jump to a hardtail guitar with a bit less output -- something that doesn't scream, "I've got a wang bar, and I'm going to use it!" The first thing I noticed was the sustain. I think that's mostly the lack of a tremolo and fewer magnets under the strings. The pickups have a vintage sound which works well with a slightly-crunchy amp setup.

The finish is nearly-flawless.The neck has a satin finsh, and fairly high action out of the box. It plays well, however. It will be interesting to see how it ages and how the finish wears.

My three biggest complaints aren't that serious.The machine heads are midrange. They're not as bad as I've seen on inexpensive guitars (I feared they'd be worse). They're not as good as the ones that came stock on my Strat. They don't have that super-positive, fine feel that I'd like.I've got a similar set on my acoustic guitar and they broke down a bit after 10 years, but still work passibly (the knobs wiggle).

Second in the complaint department are the frets. I don't know if it is the metal or the finish, but they don't feel super-smooth. There's a bit of a grind as you bend the strings. Some playing time and/or emery paper will probably take care of that, but we'll see.

Finally in the world of complaints are the strings. They made my fingers black. I cleaned them with a bit of alcohol, but I'll probably replace them.

I'm not a guitar connisseur. I think I had a good Japanese Strat even if it was the "Strat in Metal Clothing." The PW580 is top-to-bottom a solid guitar. For $159, I'm impressed. FirstAct is trying to build their image with the artist line and the custom-built guitars. If they keep building value guitars like this, their image will continue to grow.

(More customer reviews)I actually bought this guitar from K-Mart on "Blue Light Clearance" for $37.50. I figured even if it's junk, I'm only out $40 bucks. I got it home and was more than pleasently surprised. All the keys are tight, the frets are solid, the neck is perfectly straight and the finish is unmarred. Even the "cheap" portable amp sounds great. Guitar has nice tone and feels really good. I was nervous about asking my daughters guitar teacher what he thought of it (maybe he'd think I was a moron for buying it), but he said that it is of very good quality for a basic starter guitar. He tuned it and says it holds the tune very well. He said it is a good deal even at $150.00 (the original price).

Luna Neo Mini Electric Guitar - White Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this guitar in attempt to practice the technique of wrapping your thumb around the neck to play the bass line (watch the footage of Hendrix at woodstock). A small scale guitar would be perfect for that. And, for just that, it does ok. However, quite a number of the frets buzz, the body is not contoured to anyones body, and you are smacked in the face with "cheap". I even broke the adjustable poles on the humbuckers the first time I tried to turn them. Weirdly, this actually improved the sound quality, which was below average to begin with. With all the poles sank deep into the humbucker it actually has a rather nice mellow tone now.

Around the time I bought this, I picked up an Ibanez Mikro for the same price. As a short scale guitar, the Ibanez is much, much better and easier to play, though it lacks the "warmth" of midrange tone you get from the Luna.

For the price, the Luna a decent guitar, though it should only be considered a basic beginner guitar or practice guitar. It does look good though.
