(More customer reviews)Back in 2002, I bought the original Variax.Sonically, it was a great guitar.It had a sorta "cheap" look to it, but it was a nice instrument.I recorded one song with it before I sold it and bought a Godin LGXT.

Fast-forward to today.I recently decided that I (again) needed the versatility that the Variax offered.I decided to buy the best Variax Line 6 offered (the 700 with trem), both for aesthetics and for features and construction.The only thing left was deciding which color.The cherry sunburst was the prettiest.

I bought my Variax from Amazon.com.This is the first time I've ever bought an instrument from Amazon.They were the only ones carrying the Variax 700 cherry sunburst.I glad I bought it!Very inspiring.Extremely versatile.It's a very comfortable guitar to wear.It has a great Strat-like feel to it.Dial in one of the Strat selections, close your eyes, and you'll swear you're playing a Strat.

I realize that there are guitar snobs in the world who will claim they can tell the difference between, say, the Variax's Les Paul settings and a real Les Paul.Or the Variax's Strat settings and a real Strat.They're full of it.Close your eyes and you cannot tell.I made a recording of my Fender acoustic guitar and the Variax's "parlor" acoustic guitar settings.Guess which guitar everyone guessed was the real acoustic?You got it. The Variax's parlor guitar.Two long-time guitarists who should know the difference could not tell.My sister could not tell.My friends could not tell.They all picked the Variax as the "real" guitar.So, I'll say it again: anyone who claims that their highly-trained ear can distinguish the Variax from the "real" thing lives in a fantasy world.I've owned and played a very good Les Paul.I've owned and played a beautiful Strat.I had those instruments for years.The Variax really does faithfully mimic the guitars it models.

Get the Workbench software!If for no other reason, you can adjust the output of the various guitar models.For instance, Line 6 faithfully modeled the Strat, even its relative volume.The Les Paul pickup models are noticeably hotter.So I used Workbench software to bring the volume of the Strat pickup models to be equal with the output of the Les Paul pickup models.Problem solved!You can adjust all kinds of things using the Workbench software.If you have a PODxt Live (floor model), or the new POD X3 Live (when they're available), you can download the Workbench software for free from Line 6.If you don't have one of those, then you can buy the USB interface gadget from Line 6, which comes with Workbench.It is worth buying if you have to buy it (I think $99).Line 6 Variax Workbench 1.5

Washburn Festival Series Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this guitar for under $450.00, which I consider a fair price. The price at Amazon now fluctuates from $348.19 - $799.99.

The guitar comes set up very nicely for playing; intonation is correct, the string action is close to the frets, very nice tone, etc. The guitar's electronics (for amplification), while not outstanding, are more than adequate; they produce a nice, natural sound.

A few things that I don't think should be an issue with a guitar with a "List Price" of $1,099.90:

~ I had to get inside the guitar (by removing the electronics) to vacuum out wood debris (you could hear it rattling around inside).

~ The wood was rough in the slots of the sound-hole cut-outs; I had to sand inside of them - this is DEFINITELY something that should have been done at the factory.

~ The wood is very thin between the sound-hole slots; I would have liked to have seen some sort of internal reinforcement there.

~ This guitar has gold-colored Grover tuners (which work very nicely), but it has a silver-colored instrument cable jack. This isn't a big deal, but would it have really cost them that much more to make the jack gold-colored also?

~ The built-in tuner is OK, but not as accurate as I like. When making minor adjustments to the tuning, you can hear slight changes in the pitch before the built-in tuner picks them up. I usually end up using my Korg AW2G Clip-on Chromatic Guitar Tuner, which isn't a big deal; I use that tuner with every other guitar I'm playing anyway.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase, but would have been happier if a little more finishing effort was put forth at the factory...

Line 6 Variax 700 Guitar, Black Tremolo Review

(More customer reviews)The Line6 has been a complete replacement to my guitar collection, I wound up selling a lot of the electric guitars I had.It's excellent in the studio as well as live.The ability to turn a knob and have a completely different guitar at your needs is amazing.And they sound exactly like their descriptions (with a few exceptions [see below]).It's an even better guitar if you have a Line6 Pod XT Live or X3 Live as you can control your sounds as you switch the guitar with whatever amp model you are using.I also recommend purchasing the $99 Variax Workbench.In that software you'll be able to change the pickups, and even customize different tunings (like a capo, drop D, DADGAD) without having to tune your guitar.There are 10 Custom presets you can store on your Variax to be able to do this.

The biggest standout to me, besides the incredible Les Paul, Stratocaster and Telecaster models (which I have used the most) was the amazing tone of the ACOUSTIC models on this guitar (except for the 12-String...see below).My friend has a Taylor and the Variax Martin model ran circles around the tone of his $3000 Taylor with Fishman pickups.

There are quite a few cons to this guitar...but they have not hindered my happiness with owning the 700.

* If you're recording, and are sustaining a guitar chord, you may notice the tones dieing out near the end of a sustained chord.It's almost as if the guitar has some sort of slight noise gate.It's not too bad...but I hope someday they will fix that (there's always firmware updates coming out).

* They have been fixing the latency issue with the 12-string, although it's not quite there yet.The 12-string sounds a little too synthetic to me, compared to a real 12-string plugged into a PA system.

* If you plan to use Variax Workbench, and want to fool around with alternate tunings, there is a slight latency if you detune certain strings a lot lower than they originally are (it gets noticeable if you fool around with full-octave de-tunings).I have not noticed this problem with tuning up, however.

* I don't have this issue, as I have strong shoulders...but you'll notice, compared to a Strat or Tele is the weight of the guitar on your shoulders.It will take some getting used to, as it is heavy.I recommend a good, padded strap.Eventually it won't be so bad.

* There are no straplocks installed on the guitar.Most guitars don't come with them, but it would be a nice bonus for a $1300 guitar.The only straplocks I found to work on the Variax 700 are the Schaller straplocks.I could not get the Dunlop "buttonlocks" to install, as the nails were too small.

I would like to see a Maple neck instead of a Rosewood neck.That's just a personal preference, though.There may be some third party company making them in the future.

(More customer reviews)I have played guitar for over 20 years and seldom, if ever have I been so pleased by the performance of a guitar.
The action is great: 24 frets and no dead spots. It plays just as evenly on one end of the fretboard as it does on the other.
The sound is classic: great crunch chord sounds and surprisingly subtle when necessary. Think "Children of The Sea" and "Sign of The Southern Cross" or "Symptom of The Universe". Rich, full, fat bottom sounds and beautiful clarity in the higher regions when soloing.
This guitar also looks cool as well: the cross inlays are nice without being gaudy and also Iommi's signature is noticeable without being overbearing. The guitar is practical, looks good and performs like a dream.
I don't know what weight problem the previous review was referring to but this guitar is great and I smile to myself each time I pick it up to play.

(More customer reviews)I wanted a guitar that came with everything that would be inexpensive. Well with this you get what you pay for. With the exception of the amp(so far) all that cool stuff it comes with will fall apart. The bag? It will rip in 2 weeks. The strap? Don't bother. Your guitar is too heavy for it. The cable cord? Will show signs of damage before you know it. As for the guitar itself? I admit it's gorgeous but it can't hold a tune--at all. Trust me, that will get very frustrating. So DON'T BUY THIS IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR LONGEVITY. And by longevity I mean more than 2 weeks.
